Renewal in the Wilderness

"Probing and provocative....
[This book] enjoins us to remember our primal sacred beginnings with clear grace and compelling reasons. Lionberger has an encompassing reach, giving voice to atheists, agnostics and the simply soul-weary, as well as believers from many of the world's great faith traditions."

"Reading this book made my fingers tingle and the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. The physical experience of wilderness strips us down to the basic elements of body and soul. And when our spiritual nerve endings are exposed, we find...God. Start this journey today."

~ Rev. Dr. Susan Thistlethwaite, president and professor, Chicago Theological Seminary

"If you've been wondering how to find God, here's a topo map."

~ Bill McKibben, author of "The End of Nature" and other books

"Nature Brings Man Closer to God"

A dog-sledding adventure turned into a spiritual one for an Evanston man, and now he leads wilderness excursions for all faiths

Selected excerpts from a half-page article in the Chicago Tribune about Renewal in the Wilderness:

Nature brings man closer to God

"Standing on a frozen lake in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, on a February day with temperatures at 25 degrees below zero, John Lionberger couldn't understand why he suddenly felt like he was being bathed in warmth.... As a lifelong agnostic, or a 'borderline atheist who was hedging his bets,' Lionberger said he did not want to believe he was feeling God's presence.
Lionberger...would spend the next 18 months [trying to] deny that he had been visited by God."

"'Maybe the wilderness experience is one we can all share and speak about God without shedding blood,' he said."
