"I have always been aware of trust, but I think I learned to use it more this trip. Trusting in my fellow group members, and also in God as I traveled through the wilderness of nature that God provided."

Canoe Trip, Kayak Trip SafetyRenewal in the Wilderness approaches the safety issue very seriously. We plan our trips in a very conservative manner, and it begins with our request that each participant provide a health care professional's written OK. We give safety talks at the start of each trip-and continue those talks through the trip-so that voyageurs know, and practice, good safety protocols. John Lionberger has been carefully trained in wilderness first aid by the Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA), and received his Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certificate from the WMA. On trips that involve Outward Bound, which owns the WMA, each of their instructors also has a WFR certificate. Outward Bound plans trips with safety as their first consideration. John has also received extensive (i.e., thirty days) and intensive training by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in wilderness safety, as well as by Outward Bound.
